8/17/14 – 9/7/14
The LORD lives! Bless God, my rock! Let the God of my salvation be lifted high!
Worshipping with the Psalms as our focal point, this series focuses on the promises of God, whose love and grace are enduring features our lives. In these days of instant gratification and fleeting interest, the Psalms remind us of the steadfast nature of God, calling each of us who are made in the image of God to be steadfast in our promises. We’ll prepare ourselves for a new start in the Fall with some promises as a church, to work toward fulfilling our missional goals and being a safe haven where all can know the sure foundation of God!
Solid Rock 8/17/14
We begin our series exploring the steadfast nature of God with the phrase, “God is good… all the time… and all the time… God is good!” Indeed, life is not always good, people are not always good, hard times do come. But God IS always good and gives us the strength to face anything, anytime. We will focus on the role of our communal worship as a safe and life-giving place of refuge where all are welcome.
I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, so I shall be saved from my enemies. The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of perdition assailed me; the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
Lead me to the Rock 8/24/14
Our spiritual path leads us toward a God that is “higher” than anything of this world. Too often we try to count on our own power and struggle when we realize that it is not enough to effect the kind of transformation we seek. How can we, as a church, keep leading each other on the spiritual path toward the God who raises us up?
Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.
From the end of the earth I call to you, when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I; for you are my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.
Let me abide in your tent forever, find refuge under the shelter of your wings.
For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
Prolong the life of the king; may his years endure to all generations!
May he be enthroned for ever before God; appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!
So I will always sing praises to your name, as I pay my vows day after day.
Shelter of the Rock 8/31/14
One of the basic needs of every human being is shelter. Whether we need physical shelter in the form of a place to hang our hats, emotional shelter in the form of encouragement and affirmation amidst life’s struggles, or spiritual shelter in the form of a supportive faith community, shelter is gift of God’s grace which we can participate in bringing to the world. We will focus this week on our relationship with the homeless in our community, considering several ways that we can offer the ministry of shelter with and through agencies already doing good work.
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh—my adversaries and foes – they shall stumble and fall.
Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;
though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident.
One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after:
to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.
For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock.
My Rock and My Redeemer 9/7/14
To be “redeemed” is to be set on a right and good path. As this series comes to a close, we engage in a ritual of promises to walk the good path together. We’ve focused on a mission project, and on making our worship a life-giving and safe place where all feel welcome. We move into the Fall with excitement and verve!
The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork.
Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is pure, enduring for ever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
