Pastor Ann’s Update May 2015
Christian activist; is that an oxymoron or a redundancy? Is a Christian a nice, quietly traditional, compliant citizen or is a Christian one who stands up for justice and against war, who speaks out against oppression and exploitation of others? I think that we are often swayed between those two expectations. John Dominic Crossan has explored the Lord’s Prayer in a challenging and insightful book, The Greatest Prayer; Rediscovering the Revolutionary Message of The Lord’s Prayer. The Monday Faith Forum group read and discussed it earlier this year, and we are now in the midst of a sermon series in which we are able to hear the radical message as we acknowledge the safe comfort that this prayer holds for us. How do we hold on to the comfort of safely belonging to a community and a culture while at the same time live and breathe as activist? I believe, at the very depth of my being, that these two are not opposite pulls in life, but rather, parallel paths that strengthen and inform one another. May we be blessed as we walk our paths together.
